THE CAVE
The body is an 36-inch chrome CRT TV. Instead of the tube on the front of the object - special glass, which becomes transparent when voltage is applied. In the “off” state hand’s outline is projected onto screen surface (a reference to the cave art and the myth of Plato’s cave). When visitor puts his hand on the outline,TV projection “screen” becomes transparent. Inside the case is a system of aluminum mirrors, lights and figurines of Buddha. Conceptually, it’s a rethought reference to the 1970 pioneer art work of Nam June Paik, in particular, his famous series “TV Buddha”. When hand is withdrawn, the “screen” becomes opaque.
